Magaliesberg Canopy Tours

Gauteng is truly a unique place in South Africa. Although not endowed with ocean access, there are still unique places that simply take your breath away. And they are right under your nose! If you want to have fun with the kids sans the dangers associated with adventure sports, then a canopy tour is the most fun and by far the safest option you will have around Johannesburg. Located in the heart of the majestic Magaliesberg Mountains, the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour® is a unique eco-adventure that lives up to its promise of taking you on a journey through the ecology and geology of the second oldest mountain range in the world. The 11 platforms that have been cautiously constructed high against the rock faces of the spectacular Ysterhout Kloof and joined by 10 cabled slides up to 140 metres long and in places 30 metres above the canopy floor offer superior fun.

As this was my second tour, I was more worried about the kids’ ability to have safe fun while being entertained by our 2 tour guides with humorously rendered interesting facts about the history of the Magaliesberg range and its protected fauna and flora. Kudos to Papi and his colleague for settling the nerves of the little ones during the safety briefing with side-splitting anecdotes about safety and having fun on the tour! Incidentally, that safety briefing is still the most popular topic around the dinner table. There was never a stage where the kids and I felt unsafe during the tour, and the adventure came as advertised. Pure unadulterated educational fun and excellent physical activity! I particularly liked the hike back to the van and the welcome sip of water from the crystal clear and sparkling stream that snakes its way at the floor of the kloof.

The Magaliesberg Canopy Tour easily ticks all the boxes for fun, education, natural beauty of surroundings and safe outdoor physical activity. If you have kids that would rather exercise their thumbs on the Playstation or even bigger kids that do not particularly enjoy physical activity, the canopy tour is the perfect antidote with its careful mix of adventure, safety, outdoor fun and scenic appeal. The weather was excellent and we couldn’t have picked a better day even if we tried. Slightly overcast and warm with a gentle breeze to keep us cool and focused on the activity at hand. I would absolutely recommend the tour as a fun and safe family outing to be enjoyed by all members of the family and would do it again soon. If you do 3 canopy tours anywhere in the country from the group and get you loyalty card stamped, you get the 4th canopy tour for free in any one of their canopy tours of your choice anywhere in South Africa. Now let’s see if I can take grandma and granddad next time!
