Celebrate Heritage Day with African Luxury Fashion

Discover the new Heritage Capsule Collection designed by Woolworths employees To celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of Heritage Day this year, Woolworths launched a creative competition open to all its employees with one simple brief: to use their unique talents to capture their stories and represent their cultural heritage. And the employees did just that: paintings, sculptures, sketches and doodles were submitted in an array of dazzling colours and designs – truly illustrating the pride and appreciation for different cultures. After much deliberation by a diverse panel of Woolworths’ leadership and a special celebrity judge, Tshepo Mohlala of Tshepo Jeans and Sunday Times lifestyle Editor in chief, Aspasia Karras, two winners were chosen.

Not only did they win fabulous prizes, but their creations will be printed on clothing and decor designs providing Woolies customers with a unique and culturally-inspired Heritage Day Capsule Collection. The Collection will be available to shop exclusively online and at selected Woolworths stores nationwide. “As a proudly South African brand, we were so impressed by all the submissions we received, and it showcased just how passionate and creative the Woolworths family is,” says Sonia Battista, General Manager for Fashion at Woolworths. “We saw the pride of heritage in every creation and the beautiful and sensitive way in which every entry explored culture! It was a very tough deliberation, and we are proud to announce Patricia Busisiwe Skosana and Tara Franken as the winners. By hosting this competition,” she says, “we wanted to encourage staff members to express their unique heritage through creative outlets, foster a sense of appreciation for different cultures, and provide customers with a unique and culturally-inspired product range.” The Heritage Day Capsule Collection features bold and striking prints for men, women, and girls, as well as scatter cushions. The vibrant colours on the skirts and shirts exude the spirit of Heritage Day, and it comes just in time for the arrival of Spring!

Meet the winners Patricia Busisiwe Skosana Patricia is from Pretoria and works as a Fashion Department Manager. Her artwork was inspired by Isigolwani. “As a Ndebele woman, I pride myself in representing my culture and marital status through the adornment of our attire,” she says. “In my drawing, I wanted to represent Isigolwani through the use of circles in different sizes and the colours that represent our rainbow nation. The Ndebele tribe is also known for their colourful drawings outlines with black lines, which inspired the black lines around the circles.” Tara Franken Tara is from Cape Town and is a Buying Assistant in the RE: Denim department. She has always been creative at heart, so when the competition came up, she knew she had to participate. “I did this piece because I wanted to express how I feel and see our heritage and what we are about as South Africans and how we all show up together,” she says. “Even though many of us live separate lives we are all connected in our unique ways, and that is what makes us so special to one another’.
